The Path.
A journey of men with men, walked one stretch at a time.
There are roads a man can drive in an afternoon, and roads he can only walk. This is the second kind. Every two weeks a small circle of men meets, in the room at Warrens or online across the water, and over close to two years the path moves through six phases. Each phase is whole in itself. A man is only ever asked for the next one.
The stretches of the road
The first phaseAwakening
It begins with noticing. A man notices his breath, his body, and the rules he has lived by since he was a boy, rules so familiar he no longer sees them. He discovers, perhaps for the first time, that he still exists when he is producing nothing.
Six gatherings, from the last week of January to early April 2027.
The second phaseDescent
The work goes inward and downward, to what a man has carried and what he has lost, and to who he became in order to survive. Nothing here is rushed, and nothing is forced. He does not go down alone. The circle goes with him.
The third phaseThe Crossing
What he set aside in order to be strong begins to return: tenderness, the freedom to receive, and the life and energy that went quiet in him somewhere along the way. This is the turning point of the path.
The fourth phaseSecond Birth
Born first of water, now of Spirit. A man begins to lay down the habit of carrying everything, and learns to give without needing to prove himself.
The fifth phaseMature Strength
Mature strength, in its oldest and truest shapes. These shapes are recognised in a man as they grow in him. They are never pressed onto him from outside.
The sixth phaseReturn and Service
He goes back to his family, his work and his community, not as a hero, but as a grounded elder in the making. The question that brought him in, what is my life for now?, begins to answer itself in how he lives.
At the closeThe Return
The path closes with two days away together. There is breath and sound, and a long look back down the road. Then comes a rite of passage: the blessing into manhood that most of our men were never given, spoken by an elder.
The thresholds
Every phase ends at a threshold, a gathering where the crossing is marked and a man feels in his body that he has passed through something. There he chooses for himself, with no one choosing for him: to go on, to pause, or to walk that stretch again.
Four weeks of rest follow each threshold. The pauses are part of the work. What was stirred needs time to settle into an ordinary Tuesday before the next stretch begins. Experience needs time to find its explanation.
Only the first stretch is asked of a man.
Awakening begins in the last week of January, and the way into it is a single evening this October.
